thinglets: Canada and Copyright

Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa and Canada's foremost critic of the federal Conservatives Bill C-61, has released an independent documentary on some of the concerns with proposed copyright and DRM legislation in Canada. You can watch the entire film at his website, or download the flv file from blip.tv. Linked below is an embed of an abridged version from Youtube.

If you are Canadian and concerned about the tightening restrictions of copyright and DRM legislation, please check this out to get informed. If you are not Canadian, but want to see what Draconian measures could be coming to federal legislation in your country, feel free to get the heads up.

thinglets: surfin' bird (a poem)

SURFIN' BIRD
(Frazier - White - Harris - Wilson)

A-well-a everybody's heard about the bird
B-b-b-bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word

thinglets: in the key of oscar

I don't know if it's the weather or the time of year, but rainy fall afternoons make me think of jazz. When I think of jazz, I still mourn Oscar Peterson. Growing up a piano player, being a fan of ranking everything, my favorite piano players were Keith Emerson for Rock, Oscar Peterson for Jazz and Glenn Gould for Classical. I'm happy to say that two of the three are Canadian and that even that point of national pride would not dissuade many non-Canadians from agreeing with me.

A little bit of jazz for your next rainy afternoon:

thinglets: not good pumpkins... a great pumpkin!

As much as I slagged Hallowe'en in my last post, here's one of the few great aspects of the holiday. The tragic self-esteem of Charlie Brown. The dependency issues of Linus. The fawning infatuation of Sally. The repressed sexuality of Lucy. The denial of Peppermint Patty. The pressured prodigy of Schroeder. The tacit understand that every adult only speaks gibberish and that the only cool character is a dog - enjoy! ... btw... I got a rock.

thinglets: the pocket projector

No, I didn't say pocket protector. Now I know the prototypes for this have been around for a while, but if you want all the geek cred a pocket device can muster, this might be the holiday toy for the bulging-wallet impaired. I wonder if comes with a velcro strip to secure it in case of clumsy table bumpers. For somewhere between $500-600 you can be the coolest cat on your block or you can use your neighbor's wall as a screen.
