thinglets: Unpack the 3 Minute Hallucinogenics and Watch "Vegeterrible"

Ever wonder what a killer avocado would look like...

Easily one of the coolest cartoons I've seen in recent years on the web. I sincerely want to come home after a night of a few wobbly pops and put this on the big screen. Really cool animation done with TVPaint. Love the style and the pacing, and especially love the absurdist ending.

I don't post many Vimeo finds, but this one's worth it!

lovehate: The Indignity of the Opposite End

Isn't it nice what happens when proprietary bullshit fades into the background... oh, sorry, I'm writing in the present tense. EVERY company wants to sprout out proprietary connectors so that nothing can work with anything else. Isn't it nice that when you step into your car, you don't have to think about such things.

If you step into your car, your friend's van, your dad's station wagon, across North America, no matter the make or model (with almost no exceptions) you can charge your electronic devices through a common "cigarette lighter" port.

Consider that USB 2.0 and the soon-to-be-released 3.0 have common primary end standards, yet the opposite ends on most USB-charged devices have a mixed bag of varying proportions. This is, of course, not unique to car lighter power cords. The standard of your home electrical socket ultimately ends up in a ridiculous amount of other ends. For years the standard "RCA" audio and video jacks on the backs of most stereos, VCRs and DVD players would ultimately have to be accommodated by bizarre Y-adapters and jacks and splitters and your local Radio Shack would reap the rewards.

I once had to rig up the following configuration to connect an iPod to an old powered mixer that only had XLR inputs (X=ground, L=left, R=right):

1/8th inch male, 1/4 inch female -> 1/4 inch male 20 foot cable -> 1/4 inch female/female junction -> 1/4 inch male, XLR female -> XLR male/male junction

Now I know it sounds ridiculous to use so many connectors, but it's what I had and I was going to be damned if I bought one more connector or cable... anyway, I got to listen to Earth, Wind and Fire at that party - which made everything worth it. Oh, and by the way, the iPod was plugged in at the time too, with the traditional iPod ridiculously configured connector.

Why can't the simplicity of the primary end resolve in simplicity at the other?

And, on a related topic, who the hell pays Monster Cables obscene prices?

Finally, since I don't drink coffee, I think I've found my ultimate auto AC adapter below.

thinglets: Begone Dull Care

via nfb.ca

Some groovin' 1949 bebop to hand-painted film animation - must be Norman McLaren. This vid just felt right for a Sunday afternoon that seemed a bit lazy. Also, the music is played by Oscar Peterson. What more could you ask for? Make sure you snap your fingers at the end of this one.

thinglets: when no other cartoons were on...

Remember the cartoons you used to watch just because they were the only ones on. Sometimes running over a lunch hour as you were scarfing down a bowl of Hamburger Helper or at 6:30am before any real programming came on, these cheap ass cartoons were the saving grace of 70's kids who couldn't stand watching test patterns... where I grew up anyway.

The Mighty Hercules... "Iron in his thighs."

Rocket Robin Hood... "Band of Brothers marching together."

Kum Kum... this made for some bad acid trip lunches.

Hammy Hamster... wow! I just wanna chill to late night Hammy, Maddy and GP.

thinglets: Aquaman - Tusky's Lament

Spent a couple of evening's mashing up this video to an old parody song I've had lying around for years. Mashup includes a karaoke mp3 of Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", my words and vocals, and a strange mix of pics from around the web.

thinglets: Norman McLaren - Dots (1940)

Norman McLaren's "Dots" - Hand painted on film frames with soundtrack created by scratching the audio track of the actual film stock in various shapes and lengths to create tones. Almost 70 years old. Please check out some of his other stuff on YouTube.

thinglets: Retro Canadian Game Shows

Okay... first off, if anyone outside of Canada ever thought they saw a cheap game show, they were never in the Great White North during the 1970's. Grand prizes included toaster ovens, dinner for twos, and the cash sometimes almost went to triple digits. Included below are some clips from some of the cheesiest games ever played on television.

The Premier Episode of the Mad Dash

Check out Alex Trebek's 'fro in Pitfall (admittedly this show had a budget)

Definition actually lasted until the 80s, but still brings the cheese

Pay Cards was produced in Canada and syndicated to the US... so you know it was good!

thinglets: Cereal Thrillers from Childhood

Get your pop culture retro fix on with the Cap'n, the Count, Frankenberry and Mr.T.

And as a special bonus a rare episode of the Sugar Bear cartoon before cereals were afraid to put "sugar" in their names.

thinglets - The Ultimate 60s Kid Show Trip

If you really want to get a sense of how trippy kids' shows can get, check out this intro from the classic HR Puffnstuff. Oh, I know that Japan has done its best to create some very surreal and bizarre anime for the past 30 years that have become even more crazy when adapted for the US, but Puffnstuff was just "Woah man, is that Mayor McCheese and a talking flute" kinda trippy.
