I haven't really done a music podcast in a while, and this is kind of a hybrid. A couple of weeks ago I'd heard a rumour that Gil-Scott Heron had passed, which I later found not to be true. The thought did cause me to re-listen to much of his work, and since he is generally unknown to many people of my generation and younger, I thought it would be a good time to share. Pieces of a Man was the title of one of his most popular albums, and co-opting it for a piecemeal appoach to his early career, seemed appropriate for this post.
Unlike most podcasts I do, I certainly cannot claim that this is Creative Commons, however I hope it is educational to many of you and enjoyable as well.
A quick mashup of some Prelinger archive atom bomb testing with the latest from Girl Talk's CD All Day track 1 - Oh No. Although there was no concerted effort to match up particular parts of the music with the video, at some points the results were serendipitous.
If you are a fan of Gerald Scarfe's animation work in The Wall by Pink Floyd, you'll probably find The Music Scene very appealing. Certainly not the same level of drama to the soundtrack as one would find with Floyd, but a stirring visual metaphor that leads you on a five minute journey of an omnipresent medium pushing it's will on the world before collapsing under its own intent.
Very cool visuals that would be enhanced by any hallucinogenics you may wish to consume... perhaps, however, the medium is quite the hallucinogenic in itself.
Not knowing a whole bunch about the band Faithless, I happened upon this track while watching a festival broadcast on HDnet and was hooked. Now that I've heard all three distinct versions below and read the lyrics, I love this track even more. Give Faithless a try and let me know which version you like best - unless you're like me and find it hard to decide.
Mass Destruction (Faithless)
Whether long range weapon or suicide bomber Wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction Whether you're soar away sun or BBC 1 Misinformation is a weapon of mass destruction You could a Caucasian or a poor Asian Racism is a weapon of mass destruction Whether inflation or globalization Fear is a weapon of mass destruction
My dad came into my room holding his hat I knew he was leaving, he sat on my bed told me some facts, son. I have a duty, calling on me You and your sister be brave my little soldier And don't forget all I told ya Your the mister of the house now remember this And when you wake up in the morning give ya momma a kiss Then I had to say goodbye
In the morning woke momma with a kiss on each eyelid, Even though I'm only a kid Certain things can't be hid Momma grabbed me Held me like I was made of gold But left her inner stories untold I said, momma it will be alright When daddy comes home, tonight
Whether Halliburton or Enron or anyone Greed is a weapon of mass destruction We need to find courage, overcome Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
The skin under my chin is exploding, again. I'm getting stress from some other children. I'm holding it in, we taking sides, like a politician an' if I get friction we get to fightin'. I defend my dad he's the best of all men an whatever he's doin he's doin the right thing. It's frightenin but it makes me mad, why do all of these people seem to hate my dad?
An' if that ain't enough, now I've got these spots. I go to sleep every night with my stomach in knots. and whats more I can hear Mama next door explore the radio for reports of war. and all we ever seem to do is hide the tears, seems Daddy been gone for years. But he was right, now I'm geared up for the fight an he would be proud of me if Daddy came home tonight.

My story stops here, lets be clear This scenario is happening everywhere And you ain't going to nirvana or farvana You're coming right back here to live out your karma With even more drama than previously, seriously Just how many centuries have we been waiting for someone else to make us free And we refuse to see That people overseas suffer just like we Bad leadership and ego's unfettered and free Who feed on the people they're supposed to lead I don't need good people to pray and wait For the lord to make it all straight There's only now, do it right. Cos I don't want your daddy, leaving home tonight
I have no idea what this song is about, but I found it pretty infectious nonetheless. That coupled with a very cool music video that almost gave me a seizure and I was hooked.
Be the cool hipster of your office at work today by listening to music no one in North America has probably heard. Check their website for bonus marks - heavy and poppy... do yourself a favour and check it on Vimeo in HD fullscreen for the best viewing experience.
While I finalize the 200th lovehate podcast, I thought I'd share some music with you folks. Since it's not a #musicmonday and I didn't feel like talking too much. I figured it was time to bring da noize, bring da punk... just for fun.
Unlike most of the content I create on this site, this is not Creative Commons. I will comply with any and all takedown requests. I encourage you to buy these tracks (and more by the bands) if you like them.
I'm certainly not an aficionado of electronica. I kind of like most of it, but it rarely blows me away. This much is true in the soundtrack to inter // states video by Woob. The video however, is something to behold. Absolutely beautiful. I almost want to mashup some old Philip Glass below it and chant Koyaanisqatsi. A beautiful job by Samuel Cockedey. Check it out in HD fullscreen: awesome!
A friend wanted a "love" podcast instead of a "hate" podcast. When that idea comes up, my thoughts always turn to music. To hear about the fortuitous rediscovery of this gem, have a listen to Episode 193!
